What is Mud Club?

An online occupational therapy program using Minecraft Education Edition to help kids learn and practice new skills with peers. Engagement in Mud Club earns members Skills Coins which can be redeemed for OT tools (see the Rewards Catalog) delivered right to their door!

Who is Mud Club for?

Mud Club welcomes kids of all neurodiversities (or "all kinds of minds"), but especially aims to support autistic kids between the ages of 7 and 16 years. Mud Club is available to families in British Columbia and Ontario, Canada. If you are interested in Mud Club but live outside of these locations, let us know where you are located. Although gaming is a common interest, it is not a pre-requisite to join the program!

Why is Mud Club all virtual?

With roots in real-world adventure based therapy, Mud Club was launched in early 2020 as a therapy option for the digital age. Research shows that Minecraft is a great open-world platform for teaching social skills to neurodiverse kids; the pairing of gaming and therapy resonates well with the needs of today’s 21st century kids and families. By integrating therapy into the gaming space, kids are now exploring, learning and socializing from the comforts and safety of home! Plus, "MUD" is an old gaming term for Multi User Dimension, which we thought was pretty fitting, right!?!

What does a typical therapy session look like?

Each 1-hour group therapy session starts with a brief check-in and a skills lesson, followed by the group joining into Minecraft to explore and play, practice new skills, and connect with peers. Our focus is on developing 21st century skills during these sessions, especially teamwork skills, digital literacy, social emotional learning and executive functioning.

What is included in a Mud Club membership?

A weekly membership is required to participate in Mud Club programming. For $100/week, membership includes two 1-hour group therapy sessions per week, all required software licensing, plus the Rewards Program. Memberships can be cancelled at any time.

What technology is required to access Mud Club?

Mud Club can be accessed from home, school or digital learning spaces. A computer (Windows or Mac), iPad or Chromebook with a stable internet connection is required. Headphones with a mic are recommended.

What funding sources are accepted?

This online occupational therapy program is eligible for BC's Autism Funding Program as well as the Ontario Autism Program. We also work with several online schools and private insurers. We are happy to help families explore alternative funding sources to help pay for services.
